Andrew Cuomo's 'Tracing Army': Will It Be More Effective Than Trump's Methods?
Andrew Cuomo recently announced that he and Mike Bloomburg will be working
together to create a “tracing army” to help isolate people with COVID-19. Essentially, the
tracing program looks at people who tested positive for COVID-19, then ‘traces’ who that person
was in contact with to get them into isolation so that the virus does not continue to spread to
more people. The idea came from other countries who have implemented the program, such as
Germany, Singapore, and South Korea, to be able to reopen their businesses and economy
sooner.
In comparison to President Trump’s efforts, Cuomo is seeking to find all who could
possibly have contracted the virus and get them into isolation so that the spread of COVID-19
does not continue. Cuomo believes that by doing so death rates will go down and the states that
use this method will be able to reopen their economies sooner rather than later.
Trump has been a lot more lenient in his policy of self-isolation. In his 30 Days to Stop
the Spread of COVID-19 method, people who feel they are sick are supposed to self-isolate
themselves, instead of being requested by the government to be in isolation. Cuomo is going
against the codes and methods set-up by President Trump and his Coronavirus Taskforce.
In Gauna’s “Populism, Heroism, and Revolution”, he explains how sometimes politicians
contest codes set up by the society in an effort to get citizens to reevaluate the codes and realize
there can be other ways to have success in the society. By reevaluating the codes set up by
Trump, Cuomo is using a counter-performance to change the peoples’ perspectives on how to
combat the spread of COVID-19. Considering most people do not believe the government
should be limiting more of their freedoms, Cuomo is using a less popular code and method to
stop the spread of the virus.
Although this may be less popular, it has shown to be effective and is worth the try to
stop a terrible pandemic that has caused grief and chaos throughout the entire country.
Ironically, although this is a much different approach to Trump’s method to stop the spread,
Cuomo actually met with Trump who granted a $1.3 billion fund to help get the tracing program
up and running for the state of New York. Obviously, Cuomo believes this will be more
effective than allowing the people to isolate when they are already sick. However, since this is a
counter-performing method used by Cuomo, it may be unpopular, but could be more effective in
stopping the spread and allowing the economy to open up sooner rather than later.
