Governor Cuomo For President?

Governor Cuomo has been at the center of the Coronavirus spotlight the past three months and his popularity among American citizens has grown as well. In a recent poll by Siena College, respondents were asked who they trusted more to reopen New York, Trump or Cuomo. The results showed that 78% trusted Cuomo, while only 16% trusted President Trump in the decision to reopen the state. This poll shows how iconic of an individual Governor Cuomo has become in such a short amount of time.
His actions and rising popularity have driven people, especially among the Democrat Party, to encourage Governor Cuomo to run against Trump in the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election. There have even been shirts made with the slogan “Lead Like Cuomo”. In Hariman and Lucaites writing, they noted how shirts with some form of iconic meaning behind them promote everyday discussion about a topic. “By tracking Iwo Jima paraphernalia such as figurines, commemorative plates, paperweights, plaques, wall hangings, ball caps, key chains, beer steins, and T-shirts It becomes evident that there is a steady demand for opportunities to take the icon into small-scale, everyday settings.” A simple T-shirt that preaches for people to “Lead Like Cuomo” is encouraging the job that Cuomo has done in response to the Coronavirus and begging for him to become a larger part of the political community (i.e. President).
The trending popularity of the New York Governor has less to do with the unpopular actions by Trump and has more to do with the fact that Cuomo seems to be everywhere, doing everything to defeat the Coronavirus. This type of iconic impact on the New York community and his outspoken attitude towards Trump have been the characteristics that people believe can defeat Trump in the upcoming election, especially considering Democratic nominee Joe Biden has been fairly quiet throughout this whole pandemic. However, when Governor Cuomo was approached by his brother Chris about running for the Presidency, Cuomo responded “No”. When asked if he has thought about it or considered it, Cuomo responded “No”. When asked if he was open to thinking about it, Cuomo responded “No”.
Although right now Cuomo seems fairly confident that he will not be running for President this year or in the future, circumstances do change rapidly. Another mistake or disagreement with Trump may ignite something in the new Democratic icon that can lead him to running for the White House in November, either as the Democrat nominee or as an Independent candidate.
